Quick Answer: Hellenbrand makes capable, conventional softeners, mainly the ProMate line, and sells them only through local dealers, not on Amazon. A Hellenbrand is worth buying if your local dealer is good and the installed price is fair. The hardware is mainstream, and the warranty is decent but not generous: one year on the whole system, and coverage that ends if you sell the house. If you're comfortable doing your own install, similar metered softeners are sold online, like the Fleck 5600SXT 48,000-grain and the lower-priced Aquasure Harmony 48,000-grain. If you have iron too, look at the Iron Pro 48K combination unit.

Most people don't go looking for Hellenbrand. A dealer brings it to them, usually after a free water test, with a quote and a model name like "ProMate" or "EcoMax." If that's where you are, this page is for you. It covers what's behind the brand, what the paperwork actually promises, and the questions that separate a fair quote from a padded one.
We haven't owned or installed a Hellenbrand. What's below comes from Hellenbrand's own site, a ProMate-1 owner's manual, a Hellenbrand dealer's model pages and industry directory listings.
In this guide
Who's behind the name
Hellenbrand, Inc. is a Waunakee, Wisconsin manufacturer, established in 1967 according to trade directory listings. It makes residential and commercial softeners, Iron Curtain iron-removal systems, multimedia and carbon filters, and reverse osmosis units. Over the years it has used the trade names Hellenbrand, ProMate, AutoMate, WaterMate, Millennium and Iron Curtain.
Two things to know up front:
- Dealer-only. Hellenbrand's site sends you to "a national network of local dealers" and offers a free water analysis. There's no direct online store and no new Hellenbrand softeners on Amazon. Units that show up on resale sites are used or old stock, with no warranty for you.
- Not sold in California. Both the website footer and the ProMate-1 manual say the products are not for sale or distribution in California (the manual dates this to August 2018).
Which ProMate is on your quote?
A Hellenbrand dealer's site lists these residential models. Specs vary by dealer configuration, so ask for the spec sheet of the exact model and tank size you're being quoted.
| Model | What the dealer page highlights |
|---|---|
| ProMate 1 | Standard metered single-tank softener |
| ProMate 6.0 DMT | Distribution plate, "Smart Control" that logs 63 days of usage to adjust reserve, and a "super scrub" resin cleaning feature |
| ProMate EcoMax | Top efficiency model: no nuts, bolts, screws or micro switches in the valve, insulated tank jacket, full-flow bypass, backlit display; claims over 5,000 grains per pound of salt |
| E6 twin tank | Two tanks alternate, so soft water is always available; claims up to 17% salt and water savings over single-tank metered systems |
Hellenbrand's signature feature is its distribution plate (sold as "Superior Flow" and, on EcoMax, "Vortech"). The dealer says it has 56% more surface area than cone-type distributors on 10-inch tanks. The idea is a better backwash with less water. It's a real design choice, not just marketing, but we've seen no independent test that puts a number on the savings in a home.
Inside a ProMate-1, per the owner's manual
The manual covers ProMate-1 models PM1-024 through PM1-064. Useful specs for comparing quotes:
- Tanks: 8 x 44 inch (PM1-024) up to 13 x 54 inch (PM1-064), holding 0.75 to 2 cubic feet of resin
- Valve: a metered 1-inch ProMate-1 control with an electronic board and motor-driven piston
- Regeneration: metered, with options for delayed (default 2:00 a.m.), immediate, or both, plus an optional 1–28 day calendar override
- Hardness: handles up to 100 gpg
- Iron: up to 2 ppm dissolved (ferrous) iron. Add 3 gpg to the hardness setting per ppm of iron.
- Operating limits: 25–125 psi and water no hotter than 110°F
- Drain: at least 3/4-inch line, or 1-inch for long runs or high backwash flow
Nothing there is exotic. It's a conventional, well-specified metered softener, comparable to what you get with mainstream Fleck or Clack valves. That's reassuring for reliability. It also means you're mostly paying for the dealer's install and service, not for unique technology.
Before signing, check the dealer sized the tank to your home. Our guide on how to size a water softener shows the math. A 2 cubic foot tank for two people on 10 gpg water is a red flag.
Reading Hellenbrand's warranty line by line
From the ProMate-1 manual:
| Part | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Entire system | 1 year |
| Control valve electrical parts and internals | 5 years |
| Salt (brine) tank | 5 years |
| Mineral tanks 6–13 inch diameter | 10 years |
| Mineral tanks 14 inch and larger | 5 years |
The conditions matter as much as the years:
- Original purchaser and original site only. Sell the house or move the unit, and the coverage ends.
- Labor isn't covered, and you pay freight and local service fees on replaced parts.
- Excluded: fouling from sand, sediment or bacteria; improper installation; misuse; unprotected outdoor installs.
Compared with dealer brands that advertise "lifetime" tank coverage, this is plain. But read those lifetime warranties closely too; they often exclude labor and charge for parts handling. Our guide on how to read a water softener warranty covers the traps. Your dealer may add their own labor guarantee on top. Get that in writing.
Is "over 5,000 grains per pound" special?
It's good, but it isn't rare. Plenty of current softeners publish efficiency ratings right around 5,000 grains per pound of salt at their lowest salt setting. The trick is that this rating is measured at a light salt dose, which gives less capacity per regeneration. A softener set for maximum capacity uses salt far less efficiently.
So when a dealer pitches EcoMax efficiency, ask which salt setting they'll program, and what capacity that gives. Our guide to softener salt efficiency explains the trade-off, and how to compare softener spec sheets shows where to find the number on any brand's sheet.
Eight questions to ask a Hellenbrand dealer
- Which exact model and tank size, and why that size for my hardness and household?
- What salt dose will you program, and what's the capacity at that setting?
- Does the price include a bypass valve, drain line and code-required air gap?
- Who services it, what's your labor warranty, and how fast do you respond?
- What did your water test show for iron, manganese and pH? Do I need an Iron Curtain or other pre-treatment?
- Is the warranty registered in my name? Is anything transferable if I sell?
- Can I get the spec sheet and manual before signing?
- Is this price good if I don't sign today? A good dealer won't push a same-day deadline.
If you'd rather buy and install it yourself
Hellenbrand isn't sold on Amazon. If you're handy, or have a plumber you trust, these online options cover the same ground:
AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT 48,000-grain. The 5600SXT is a digital, metered on-demand valve. It's a common valve, with replacement heads, bypasses and rebuild parts sold separately, so you aren't locked into one dealer for service. A 48,000-grain tank suits many 3–4 person homes on moderate hardness. Downside: you're the installer, and support comes from the seller, not a local dealer. Check price on Amazon.
Aquasure Harmony 48,000-grain. If price is the main reason you're looking online, this is a cheaper metered system: a digital metered control head, a fiberglass-lined tank with prefilled resin, a bypass valve, and a triple-purpose sediment/carbon/zinc pre-filter described in the listing. Aquasure pitches it for 3–4 bathroom homes. The downside is that the valve is Aquasure's own, so parts come from Aquasure rather than any plumber's supply house, and there's still no in-home dealer. Check price on Amazon.
Iron Pro 48K combination softener and iron filter. If a dealer is pitching a ProMate plus an Iron Curtain because of iron, this is the DIY comparison. It's a Fleck 2510SXT metered softener built to handle hardness and dissolved iron in one tank. Confirm your iron level and type with a lab test first. High iron or iron bacteria still need dedicated treatment. Check price on Amazon.
The dealer is the real product
Hellenbrand is a long-established Wisconsin maker of conventional, well-built softeners. You can't buy one online, and the warranty ends when you sell or move it. That makes the dealer the real product. With a fair price and a dealer who'll show up in year five, a ProMate is a sound choice. If the quote looks high, or the dealer won't answer the questions above, a Fleck or Clack system installed by a local plumber gets you comparable hardware.
